Did you know....?
We have seven months of ideal weather for cockroaches to thrive, plenty of moisture from residential homes and commercial properties such as golf courses, plenty of food source from commercial and residential trash, human and pet food and certainly plenty of harborage such as municipal sewer lines, privacy cinder block wall, boulders, retaining walls or over grown bushes to name a few. The ground never freezes or the temperature never gets cold enough to negatively impact the lifestyle, reproduction survival of cockroaches. There are three major types of cockroaches that are most common in Las Vegas valley.
Oriental cockroaches also known as Water bugs are one of the largest of all cockroaches with a length of 1 inch as an adult. It is dark brown, some are reddish in color with a slight gloss to their exoskeleton. The female body are more rounded in shape than that of the male and males have wings that span the length of the body. Males are known to glide and fly for a short distance. They are nocturnal in nature and prefer dark and moist environment to nest in such as water meter, telephone, cable, irrigation and electrical boxes in the exterior of homes. Privacy cinder block walls are also a great place to hide for oriental cockroaches because it's dark and stays moist after the rain or from sprinklers. They produce an Oothecae also known as an egg capsule containing about 16 eggs each capsule. They can live up to one and a half years under optimum condition.
American cockroaches is the largest of all common household cockroaches in Las Vegas. Despite the name, this particular cockroach originated from Africa and was transported to North America through trading ships. They grow to a length of one and a half inch in length on average as an adult. They are light brown even yellowish in color with wings. Unlike the Oriental Cockroach, the American Cockroach is one of the fastest runners of it's specie at over 3 mph. American Cockroaches share similar dwelling places as that of the Oriental Cockroaches, damp and dark places in general. Each egg capsule will also contain about 16 individual eggs and can produce upwards of 140-160 eggs per lifetime. They can live up to over 2 years under optimum condition.
Lastly, the German Cockroach, also originated from Africa, is probably most problematic and hardest to control of the three cockroaches that was mentioned. This particular cockroach is usually brought into the property rather than entering the property by itself from the outdoors. They thrive on filth and their ability to adapt, survive and multiply is phenomenal. They are found most commonly in restaurants and homes with bad housekeeping practices. They are brown in color with 2 distinct lines on it's back from the head to the base of the wings. Live activity of this particular cockroach during daylight is a sure indication of a high population with will probably require a very aggressive form of treatment. Their feces and sputum produces a very distinct odor that a professional exterminator should be very familiar with. They are omnivorous in nature and will turn cannibalistic if there are a shortage in food source. Each egg capsule will contain about 40 eggs which is why they can sometimes multiply faster than you can kill them. They live up to 9 months under optimum condition.
